Mystery schools - Mystery schools were the schools of ancient Egypt and its early kings. The schools were told to have great secrets about creation and the earliest civilization, and also passed on, through symbolism, allegory, math, and, what some researchers would say magic, advanced science and philosophy, passed down from an ancient civilization that came from afar before the Great Flood.
Buddhist symbolism - Buddhist symbolism appeared from around the 3rd century BCE, and started with aniconic symbolism, avoiding direct representations of the Buddha. Anthropomorphic symbolism appeared from around the 1st century CE with the arts of Mathura and the Greco-Buddhist art of Gandhara, and were combined with the previous symbols.

In a narrow context, "symbolism" is the applied use of any iconic representations which carry particular conventional meanings.
